For those living with chronic pain, finding relief can be a long and challenging journey. Many clients arrive with deeply ingrained patterns that affect their ability to move, breathe, and feel comfortable. Andrew’s story shows how neuromuscular therapy helped him progress from restricted breathing and chronic pain to greater lung capacity and a full-body connection.
Andrew’s Initial Challenges: Chronic Pain and Restricted Breathing
Andrew first came to us with persistent neck pain and sciatica, conditions that left him struggling with energy, restful sleep, and even the basic function of breathing deeply. His chronic tension patterns and forward head posture restricted ribcage movement, limiting his lung capacity and adding to his discomfort.
Transforming Dysfunctional Patterns
In the first few sessions, Andrew’s assessments revealed weak abdominal recruitment, restricted breathing patterns, and postural issues, all of which were impacting his movement and stability. These findings also highlighted imbalances within his Deep Longitudinal Subsystem (DLS). A network of muscles essential for supporting posture and alignment. With each follow-up session, we focused on stabilizing his body and addressing these dysfunctional patterns through targeted neuromuscular techniques.
Our goal was to address the imbalances in Andrew’s DLS, improve his posture, and tone and recondition the muscles of respiration and inhalation. By releasing tension in areas like the trapezius and altering the tone of intrinsic muscles, we enabled his body to adapt, bringing about a lighter, more at-ease somatic response. This process allowed his nervous system to recalibrate and supported his autonomic system, promoting a shift toward “rest and digest”—the state essential for recovery and reconditioning.
Breakthrough Moment: Full Lung Expansion Without Strain
After a couple of sessions, Andrew noticed a profound change. “I was able to expand my lungs fully, without straining,” he said. “I felt very connected to my body and had established connections with muscles I’ve struggled to activate my whole life.” This breakthrough allowed him to breathe more easily and experience newfound control over his body.
Supporting Long-Term Health Through Movement and Breathwork
As Andrew’s journey progressed, he began working with our skilled posture specialist, Manny, to reinforce his newfound stability and strength. Together, they focused on foundational movements and functional reconditioning, helping Andrew improve his alignment and reduce old compensation patterns. This consistent work laid a foundation for lasting change, supporting both his immediate recovery and long-term health.
Takeaway
Andrew’s story demonstrates the transformative power of neuromuscular therapy in addressing chronic pain and improving lung function. With guidance, self-care, and a commitment to consistent practice, he transformed dysfunctional patterns, finding relief and a stronger connection to his body. This journey allowed for easier breathing, lasting movement improvements, and progress toward sustainable, optimal health.
